The pandemic has revealed shortcomings in global supply chains and forced business to make logistics a bigger strategic priority.

Work on the Corona virus vaccine is still ongoing, which means it will be available to everyone in the near future, which will inevitably raise the need for its transportation, which is impossible without logistics companies.

Covid-19 Vaccine Delivery Will Present Tough Challenge to Cargo Airlines.

“If 50 million doses were available today, could we distribute them?” asked Glyn Hughes, head of cargo at the International Air Transport Association, a trade group. “The answer is almost certainly ‘No’, for every jurisdiction.”

Logistics companies say they have to plan a number of issues without even knowing exactly how much of the vaccine will need to be transported, where it will be produced, and what temperature regime the vaccine will need to maintain. According to them, the number will be about 20 billion.

The world’s leading pharmaceutical and logistics companies suggest that vaccine shipments coincide with the period when shipping is most active (September-February), so a well-written plan is needed so that processes are not disrupted, which is why large shipping companies such as FedEx, DHL and others . They are already working on creating a special temperature regime and conditions to transporte vaccines.

Transportation,  is even more difficult – it requires a mode refrigerator (-70 c), and such shipping is non-standard and requires a specific approach.

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. is one of the largest air carriers and serves giants such as Amazon. “It will be the biggest challenge for the transportation industry,” said Michael T. Steen, its Commercial Director.

Just storing and transporting the vaccine is not a problem, logistics companies think that, in some countries, the existing infrastructure will prevent its smooth transportation, which means that it takes 2 years to reach all parts of the world.
